RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical performance of a universal adhesive system (Futurabond U, Voco) when applied following different adhesive strategies in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 5 years. METHODS: Fifty participants were included. Futurabond U (Voco) was applied in NCCLs using four adhesive strategies (n = 50 each): only self-etch (SE); selective enamel etching + self-etch (SET + SE); etch-and-rinse with dry dentin (ERD); and etch-and-rinse with wet dentin (ERW). All cavities were restored with Admira Fusion composite resin (Voco). Restorations were evaluated after 1, 3, and 5 years using the World Federation criteria (FDI) and the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. RESULTS: After 5 years, retention rates were 81 % (65.8-90.5) for SE, 87 % (73.2-94.4) for SET + SE, 84 % (69.6-92.6) for ERD, and 78 % (63.6-88.9) for ERW (p > 0.05). Thirty-five restorations were considered to have minor discrepancies in marginal adaptation at the 5-year recall (14 for SE, 9 for SET + SE, 6 for ERD, and 6 for ERW; p > 0.05). Sixteen restorations were detected as a minor marginal discoloration (6 for SE, 4 for SET + SE, 1 for ERD, and 5 for ERW; p > 0.05) and one restoration showed a recurrence of caries (1 for ERW; p > 0.05) at the 5-year recall. No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity after 5 years. SIGNIFICANCE: NCCLs restorations using a universal adhesive showed satisfactory clinical performance after 5 years, regardless of the adhesive strategy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical performance of a new dual-cure universal adhesive system (Futurabond U, Voco) when applied using different application strategies in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 36 months. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Futurabond U was applied in NCCLs of 50 subjects using four adhesion strategies (n = 50 restorations per group): only self-etch (SEE); selective enamel etching + self-etch (SET); etch-and-rinse with dry dentin (ERDry); and etch-and-rinse with wet dentin (ERWet). All cavities were restored using Admira Fusion composite resin (Voco). Restorations were evaluated after 36 months using the World Federation criteria (FDI) and the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. RESULTS: The after 36-month retention rates were 87% (75-92%) for SEE, 94% (83-98%) for SET, 91% (80-97%) for ERDry, and 94% (83-98%) for ERWet. Forty-three restorations were considered to have minor discrepancies in marginal adaptation at the 36-month recall (18 for SEE, 12 for SET, 7 for ERDry, and 6 for ERWet; p > 0.05). One restoration was detected as a minor marginal discoloration at the 36-month recall (1 for SET; p > 0.05). No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity and caries recurrence at 36 months. CONCLUSION: The clinical performance of the Futurabond U did not depend on the employed bonding strategy, and it was considered reliable after 36 months of clinical evaluation. However, greater marginal discrepancy was observed in the self-etch groups. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: NCCLs restorations using a dual-cure universal adhesive in self-etch and etch-and-rinse modes showed satisfactory clinical performance after 36 months.

RESUMO

Children and adolescents are most frequently affected by Traumatic Dental Injuries (TDIs). Scientific evidence shows that TDIs have a negative impact on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children/adolescents and their families. This article aimed to report two cases of avulsion and how the treatment influenced the oral sensory perception and OHRQoL. Two patients (8 and 14 years) from a "Dental Trauma Care Program" (DTCP) presenting avulsion were evaluated. The stereognosis test assessed oral sensory perception. This test obtains the average of right and wrong answers, as well as the time spent to perceive 6 silicone objects with different geometric shapes. Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ) was applied to evaluate the OHRQoL through interviews. Based on the two reports, it was possible to observe a satisfactory improvement in the OHRQoL of the child/adolescent and their families. TDI influenced negatively the oral sensory perception of both patients. Since the aesthetic prosthesis did not entirely improve the patients' oral tactile perception, it may be considered a temporary solution.

The chronology of irruption has fundamental role when it is considered the balanced occlusion. However, some pathologies may alter the chronology and thereby influence the establishment of the occlusion. This study aimed to evaluate the importance of the interrelation of specialties in the diagnosis and management of changes in the chronology of permanent teeth eruption. In the first paper, a review of the literature on the subject was carried out in the Medline databases via PubMed, SciELO and Bireme, until November 2017. The descriptors used were "pediatric dentistry", "unerupted" e "dental eruption". It was possible to verify the existence of few studies describing the importance of the interrelation between specialties, being more published literature reviews on certain pathologies, as well as case reports, with managements used with such pathologies. It could be concluded that when the different specialties work together, the unfolding of the clinical case is done adequately, benefiting the prognosis, besides improving the quality of life of the patient.

RESUMO

Aim: To present the report of a female patient, 10 years old, referred for treatment in the Dentistry Clinic of a Brazilian public university. Case report: The patient's oral health condition was unfavorable with biofilm accumulation, pain report and chewing difficulty. After anamnesis, clinical and radiographic examination, the treatment plan included removal of infectious foci (54, 55, 64, 65, 74, 75, 85, 16, 36 and 46) followed by prosthetic rehabilitation. At this stage, the functional restoration of the lower arch was restricted by the imminent eruption of the premolars. In the upper arch, the maintenance of the mesio-distal diameters aims to guarantee the chronological sequence of successors irruption and establishment of normal occlusion. During the monthly follow-up consultations the patient presents a more spontaneous smile, although she still needs constant reinforcement in oral hygiene habits. Conclusions: The rehabilitation of patients with loss of permanent teeth during the mixed dentition phase should consider the peculiarities of this period for the restoration of health without altering the normal pattern of occlusal development.
